HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY

The High School Equivalency Program enables members to earn high school equivalency diplomas through two programs: Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) [this replaced the GED in New York State], and the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). High School Equivalency diplomas for both programs are issued by the New York State Education Department of Education (NYSED). The curriculum for both programs is based on the College and Career Readiness standards.

1. Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC): The TASC curriculum comprises five sub-tests: Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies. TASC is currently offered in English and Spanish, and we offer instruction and preparation for the official test (in separate classes) in both languages. Instructors prepare students, in a traditional classroom environment, to attain the required knowledge and competencies so they can take the official test. The test is offered at official test sites approved by NYSED and is available in computerized and paper-based formats.  The passing score for each sub-test is 500 and students are required to pass all five sub-tests to earn the diploma.  If they fail any sub-test, students are only required to re-take the failed sub-test.
2. National External Diploma Program (NEDP): The NEDP is a self-paced assessment, where candidates work independently on a series of online assignments that cover a variety of subject areas, organized in ten learning units. These subjects include: Financial Literacy, Health Literacy, Civic Literacy, Geography, History, Science, and Twenty-First Century Workplace. Also covered are the foundation areas of Reading, Writing and Math. The program uses a curriculum that values the skills acquired through life experiences and in the workforce.  Candidate are assigned assessors and advisers to work with them on a one-on-one basis. Tutors are also assigned to help participants candidates improve their academic skills in Reading, Writing, and Math as they complete the required learning units. No official exam is taken. Candidates are required to submit a portfolio of work after completing all learning units and attaining 100% mastery in each.
